The United Nations has a crucial role in helping to promote peace and understanding throughout the world. It has its faults and is much critisized in some quarters. However, there is really nothing to replace it.

UNESCO United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It has its headquarters in Paris, France and 73 field offices and units in different parts of the world. Focus: Education, Communication & Information, Culture, Natural Sciences, Social & Human Sciences.

UNEP United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Focus: Johannesburg Summit 2002, World Environment Day, International Environmental Governance.

Typical Project: The "Life-Cycle Initiative," a collaboration between UNEP and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), will help governments, businesses and consumers to adopt more environment friendly policies, practices and life-styles. It will develop and disseminate practical tools for evaluating the opportunities, risks and trade-offs, associated with products and services over their whole life cycle.

UNICEF United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. The task of UNICEF is to help children living in poverty in developing countries. Created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1946 to help children after World War II in Europe Its name was shortened to the United Nations Children's Fund, but it retained the acronym "UNICEF," by which it is known to this day. UNICEF protects children and their rights by providing services and supplies and by helping shape policy agendas and budgets in the best interests of children.

UNDP United Nations Development Programme. The UN's principal provider of development advice, advocacy and grant support. It has long enjoyed the trust and confidence of governments and NGOs in many parts of the developing as well as the developed world. It is typically regarded as a partner rather than an adversary, and its commitment to a universal presence has proven especially useful in post-conflict situations and with states that had been otherwise isolated from the international community."

UNDP has six priority practice areas: Democratic Governance, Poverty Reduction, Crisis Prevention and Recovery, Energy and Environment Information and Communications Technology, HIV/AIDS

UNV The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV)is the UN programme that supports human development globally by promoting volunteerism and by mobilizing volunteers. Every year some 5,000 UN Volunteers from more than 150 different nationalities actively support the programmes of the United Nations itself and almost all UN funds, programmes and specialized agencies.
